Weeds are on the way out

Council and the Department of Transport and Planning are tackling the weeds.

The weeds along the trail are hiding the valley views and invading native vegetation. Running on a weedy, overgrown pathway isn’t much fun, and head high grass means sometimes the trail doesn’t feel safe.

The Surf Coast Shire Council and Department of Transport and Planning have funded an annual weed management program to try and stop invasive weeds from spreading into neighbouring properties and the Bellbrae Reserve. The Surf Coast Energy Group were successful in applying for a $5,000 Natural Environment Grant for weed control. We are very grateful for their support.

Stopping the weeds from spreading will help protect remnant ecological habitat. Getting rid of the weeds will stop further environmental degradation, reduce fire risk and is a first step towards restoring native biodiversity.

A first pass was done in early 2023 focusing on the eradication of Blackberry, Sweet Pittosporum and African Boneseed. Have you noticed the trail feels less overgrown, or wondered about the dead blackberry bushes?

From weeds strangling native vegetation…

To a thriving and healthy lowland forest habitat:

With thanks to our partners Surf Coast Shire Council, Department of Transport and Planning and Surf Coast Energy Group. View the complete list of partners we are working with on the Ridgeline Trail here.
