It’s cool to walk to school

Bellbrae Primary School are encouraging families to walk, ride or catch the bus to school.

Active Travel research tells us that making everyday journeys simple, easy and fun will encourage more people to choose to walk or ride.

At the moment, the easiest way to get to Bellbrae Primary or Christian College is by car.  We want to change that.

More than 480 kids attend Bellbrae Primary School and by 2027 Christian College will cater for students from prep to year 9. That’s a lot of parents in a lot of cars in a small area way too early in the morning!

The Ridgeline Trail project is about making sure there is pathway infrastructure in place so that families can make a different choice. We are working with the Surf Coast Shire Council to make sure the pathway connects local residents to where they want to go, makes it safer to cross arterial roads and intersections, and provides clear directional signage so we don’t see lost googlers driving to Anglesea on the trail.

We also understand that pathway infrastructure is only one part of the equation. The other part is making sure people know the trail is there and that they enjoy using it.

For the past three years Bellbrae Primary School Council has been working on an innovative active transport campaign supported by Regional Roads Victoria and the Surf Coast Shire Council.  Families having been meeting on Friday mornings in term 1 and 4 and riding to school along the Ridgeline Trail. Not only is it fun, it also helps develop bike riding skills and road safety awareness, so that by the time students are in grade 4-6 they are capable of riding to school or riding around the community independently.
